When Should a Consumer Unit Be Replaced?

A consumer unit, or fuse box, should be replaced when it can no longer protect your home properly, not simply because it's old. The clearest prompts are rewireable fuses instead of modern breakers, no RCDs (the safety switches that cut the power in a fraction of a second when something goes wrong), a wooden or damaged back board, or parts that are cracked, scorched or buzzing. It's also worth upgrading when you're adding a demanding new circuit like an EV charger or an electric shower, or when an EICR flags the board as needing attention. A modern unit with a safety switch on every circuit protects you from a shock and your house from an electrical fire.

We upgrade fuse boxes for homes right across Romney Marsh, from New Romney and Greatstone to Lydd, Dymchurch and Hythe, and we always test every circuit before the changeover so any hidden faults are found and priced honestly up front rather than tripping the new board later. We fit a quality unit with surge protection as standard, label everything clearly and walk you round it before we leave. The work is tested, certified and notified through our NAPIT registration, and most swaps are done in a day with only a short break in your power.

Replaced on condition, not age

We upgrade a board when it genuinely needs it: rewireable fuses, no safety switches or visible damage, never just because it looks old.

Circuits tested first

Every circuit is inspected and tested before the swap, so hidden faults are found and priced honestly up front.

Protection on every circuit

A modern unit with surge protection and a safety switch on each circuit, tested, certified and clearly labelled.

Your questions, answered

Does an old fuse box always need replacing?

Not on age alone. If yours has rewireable fuses, no RCDs, a wooden back or any cracked or scorched parts, it's worth upgrading. If it's sound, we'll tell you so and never sell you a board you don't need.

Why does my new fuse box trip when the old one never did?

Because modern boards catch faults the old one silently ignored, which is exactly the protection you're paying for. We test every circuit at the changeover, so anything the new board would flag is found and put right first.

How long does a fuse box replacement take?

Most swaps are finished in a day, with the power off for just a few hours in the middle. We plan the changeover so the disruption to your home is as short as possible.
