Can I Charge an EV From a Normal Socket?

You can, but it's rarely a good idea for the long term. A standard three-pin socket and the granny cable supplied with the car will trickle-charge an electric vehicle, but very slowly, often the best part of a day for a meaningful top-up. More importantly, ordinary sockets and the wiring behind them were never designed to deliver that much current continuously for hours on end. Sustained high load can heat up the socket, plug and cable, and a normal socket has none of the dedicated earthing and protection a car-charger circuit is built with. As an occasional emergency top-up it's fine, but as your everyday method it's slow and carries a real risk.

A dedicated home charge point solves all of it: its own protected circuit, the correct earthing arrangement and a faster, safer charge every night. We fit home chargers on walls, posts and driveway pillars right across Romney Marsh, from New Romney and Greatstone to Lydd, Dymchurch and Hythe, surveying your supply first so the price we quote is the price you pay. Everything is tested, certified and set up on the app before we leave, so you simply plug in each evening and wake up to a full battery.

Your questions, answered

Is it dangerous to charge from a three-pin socket?

For an occasional emergency top-up it's generally fine, but as your daily method it isn't ideal. Ordinary sockets aren't built for hours of continuous high load and can overheat. A dedicated charger on its own protected circuit is the safe long-term answer.

How much faster is a proper charger?

A typical 7kW home charger adds charge several times quicker than a three-pin socket, turning most of a day's charging into a few hours overnight. Tell us your car and we'll recommend the right unit.

Can my home's supply take a charger?

Most can, but we always check your incoming supply and fuse box first as part of the survey. If anything needs upgrading you'll know up front, in one clear fixed price.
